How do I get macOS Sierra?
If you buy a new Apple computer, it will come pre-installed. You won't need to do anything to install it.
If you want to upgrade an existing computer, you can download and install Sierra by going to the App Store on your Mac (shown below) and clicking Updates.
As with previous versions, macOS Sierra is only available as an online download—you cannot purchase a physical copy at a retail store.
What's new in macOS Sierra?
Although the overall interface is similar to previous versions of OS X, there are some significant changes:
- Siri is available in macOS Sierra. This digital personal assistant software has been available on the iPhone and iPad for years, and now it will also be available on desktop and laptop computers. It also has some new features that are more tailored to computers. For example, you can use it to search for files on your computer.
- Your Desktop and Documents folder can now automatically sync with iCloud Drive. If you have an iPhone or iPad, this makes it easier to access your files when you're away from your computer.
- The Photos app has various improvements. The new Memories feature can automatically create slideshows of related photos, such as photos taken at a specific location.
- Tabs are now available in many different apps—not just web browsers. If you do a lot of multi-tasking with multiple windows, this feature could be very useful.
- Apple Pay can be used to make purchases online. Note: To use this feature, you may need to have an iPhone or iPad with Touch ID because these devices are used to authenticate your payments (as shown below). Touch ID is available with the iPhone 5s, iPad Air 2, iPad Mini 3, iPad Pro, and other newer devices.
Will my apps still be there after I upgrade?
Any apps you previously had installed on your computer will still be there once you upgrade. Some Apple apps will be updated automatically when you upgrade.
Will my apps still work after I upgrade?
Almost all apps installed on your computer should work correctly in macOS Sierra. However, as with any new operating system, some software may not be totally compatible. A simple Google search will often be enough to tell if an app will be compatible with Sierra.
If you have the most recent Apple Command Line Tools (macOS 10.nn) for Xcode installed for your operating system version — which you get from developer.apple.com/download/more, then you need a package manager (e.g. homebrew) to install, and compile GCC and all of its dependencies. That compilation process will take at least an hour. After you initially install homebrew (brew):
# In the bash shell (e.g. .bash_profile), gag Google Analytics in Homebrew.
export HOMEBREW_NO_ANALYTICS=1
brew update
brew upgrade
brew info gcc
brew install gcc
brew cleanup (this removes previous application/dependency revisions saving considerable space)
The gcc application will be installed by default in /usr/local/bin.

Personally, I use Apple's clang/clang++ compilation tools rather than deal with GNU gcc.
